Who are Bailiffs and Enforcement Officers?

Bailiffs and Enforcement Officers are people autherised to remove and sell your possessions in order to pay the money you owe to another person or organization.

Bailiffs have the right to seize and sell goods to cover the value of the debt PLUS all the costs you owe. This is called 'levying distress'.

Normally the first point of contact is by phone or letter. This gives you the opportunity to pay off the debt or do something about the debt. If you ignore them, the baliffs can visit your home and seize and / or list goods for disposal.

If a bailiff leaves any goods with you this is called 'walking possession' and you must not dispose of these goods.

Bailiffs are required to obtain the best price they can for goods, but as second hand items these are unlikely to reach   their true value. Bailiffs are entitled to claim the cost of removing the goods, storing and selling them.
